CAPS - camLine Application Server
The modules of the LineWorks product family are based on a unique software architecture, the camLine Application Server (CAPS). CAPS is a client server architecture with integrated database connection. Major advantages are high data throughput, dynamic load balancing and fault tolerance. CAPS offers the well-proven and robust environment required by applications in a 24 hours / 7 days production.

The architecture consists of three layers:
- "Thin clients" are used as GUIs or open interfaces for production sites or already existing IT systems. The operating system usually employed is Windows 2000 or XP.
- The "business logics" of the LineWorks modules operate centrally as application servers, which are designed for 24h operation. The operating systems supported are Windows NT, 2000 and XP as well as various Unix versions.
- The data is centrally stored in a database, e.g. Oracle.
The real three tier architecture allows the modular structure of the system regarding:
- High Availability
- Scalability in respect to increasing system load:
To address this issue camLine has developed its own concepts and strategies, such as CDLB (camLine Dynamic Load Balancing). - Extendibility through open interfaces:
Client applications developed by customers in C, Visual Basic, Visual C++, Java or Smalltalk can interact with LineWorks servers without problems. The communication protocols CDLB, CORBA/IIOP, Microsoft COM via CAPS OLE Gateway und TIB/Rendezvous are supported. - Open database structure:
With the aid of ODBC access to all data relevant to the user is possible, e.g. data to be used in additional reports or queries. - Central maintenance:
Central maintenance of servers and central system administration for databases and software updates.
